It was 2 years ago today...David Allen thought me how to play...

OK, bad Beatles impersonation, I know…but today marks the two year anniversary of my weblog! Hurray! Now, I know I haven’t been the best of blogger here. You know, posting regularly, replying in comments, changing the looks of this site. And every now and again, something breaks for a couple of days. But hey, it’s amateur journalism man…gimme a break! I still need my dayjob to support my wife and kid ;-) Anyway, yesterday was already a sort of pre-party with the list 21 articles on GTD. Thank you for your replies by email and comments, and for the linklove through several other blogs. Much appreciated!

On this happy-happy-joy-joy day I don’t want to put the spotlight on myself. I’m modest. So last week, I asked a half dozen other GTD bloggers to tell me their thoughts on two years of GTD. We all know since the 43folders-interview with The Dave, it takes about two years to really get going with GTD. And I can vouch for that. I’m two years further down the line and man do I got a long way to go to really turn blackbelt and have a mind like water. But I do feel that progress is made! I do notice with myself that in tiny victories, the little steps are taken. So I asked the other bloggers to give me their thoughts on that subject. Since I am in the Netherlands and most GTD-ers are in the USA, I forgot it’s a holiday (Thanksgiving right?) so I didn’t get a lot of responses yet. But I would like to share some quotes from a couple of bloggers. I raked some links to go with their stories, I hope all our thoughts and ideas can be of any help for you, my valued readers

21 links to start with GTD

Since this weblog started in november 2004 I have written on very different subjects. From new software to random thoughts. But also some links and articles on how to start with GTD. What it is, how you could implement it and where potential pitfalls might be. Today I want to share those posts with you again. It was a little trip down memorylane for me and it sure brought back some memories now and then. I hope you enjoy this list and it can be of any help for you. We start with the oldest post and work to the present day. No specific order in priority or context, just in time!

GyroQ lets you work through your interruptions (contest included!)

If you are a true GTD follower, you might already know that 43folders.com is running an excellent serie of interviews with The Dave. Merlin Mann, creator of 43folders.com made some short interviews (approx. 10 minutes) covering different areas of the GTD space.

One of the podcast covered the fine art of interruptions. We’ve all been there. You arrive at work, all fresh and tinteling, ready to do make some serious miles at your desk on that one project. But after 20 minutes, three collegae’s, 10 emails an phonecall later, you know your day will be different than you thought. I find interruptions, well, highly interruptive. It takes you out of a flow, a piece you’re reading or writing. Studies show that interruptions account for 28% of a typical workday, and on average it takes 23 minutes to return to the original task from a diversion. So how to deal with it? Well…make sure you save those pieces of information on a secure place.

I would like to introduce a beautiful piece of add-on software for MindJet’s MindManager . It is called GyroQ from the company Gyronix. GyroQ is a low cost, simple piece of software for Mindjet MindManager 6 (or X5) that captures ideas in a few seconds. You do not need to have MindManager running to use GyroQ. You just press a hot key, type a few words and hit Enter. Your ideas are added to a queue (the “Q” in “GyroQ”) and saved to disk. Once or twice a day, you send the Queue to a MindManager map, turning your queued-up ideas into topics that you can reorganise and plan.

Read on to see how you can win one of five licenses for GyroQ!!

We are back online!

Well, we're back again! Last night we changed servers and this site was offline for a short while. We are back again. Not everything is working perfectly (for instance the pretty URL's) but we are working on it behind the scenes. Stay tuned.

Hack: Netvibes with Firefox 2.0

If you use Firefox 2.0 (and why shouldn't you?) and Netvibes you may have already found out that the default Netvibes extension is not working with Firefox 2.0. Which basically bums me out because every now and again it can be really handy to quicky add some feed to my Netvibes tab. Also, in the Livefeeds-settings from Firefox, you can't add the option to subscribe with Netvibes. So it's good to see there is a little hack to add Netvibes to the Livefeeds settings. With it, you can add any webfeed to Netvibes with one simple click. The article describes thesteps in FF 2.0 Beta but they also work in the final version. For me, the clean way didn't work, the "ugly" way did.

  • Open a Tab and type in 'about:config' in the address bar.
  • Filter the list by the words 'contentHandlers'. This should list the Google, Yahoo and Bloglines feed-readers.
  • You will need to create new entries for Netvibes.
  • To create a new entry right click the window and select 'New > String'.
  • For the first string enter 'browser.contentHandlers.types.#.title' as the preference name and 'Netvibes' as the string value. '#' is the next biggest number for the feed contentHandlers. In my case it was 6.
  • For the second string enter 'browser.contentHandlers.types.#.type' as the preference name and 'application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed' as the string value.
  • For the third string enter 'browser.contentHandlers.types.#.uri' as the preference name and 'http://www.netvibes.com/subscribe.php?url=%s' as the string value, '%s' here is replaced by Firefox as the URL of the RSS/ATOM feed when it subscribes to Netvibes.
  • Restart Firefox and check if 'Netvibes' is listed as a feed when you subscribe to an online feed by choosing 'Bookmarks > Subscribe to this Feed'.

My Way: Netvibes with Firefox 2.0 Beta

Update: In the comments, Franck Mahon tells us about the Netvibes team who have created a one-click solution. Check it out on their blog

We're moving servers next week!

Just a quick note from the household-department. Next week we will be moving servers for this website. Not that the current server can't keep up,but I decided to rent my own webspace. Together with the owner we will move this blog to the new space and at the same time set up a new configuration for the blog. For instance, it has been bugging me since day 1 that I can't use the official domain Whatsthenextaction.com but am stuck to punkey.com/gtd. We will also set up the so-called "pretty URL's" which make it better to read the URL's instead of those pesky ID's. Next Action after the move is starting some new design for the blog. But more on that later. First we move, than we design. If something goes "bang" in the process, you will know...

We have our winners!

Wow, this has been an interesting week! Last wednesday I wrote a review on Mindjet's MindManager and included a little contest. I have been able to give away 5 licenses for MindManager 6 Professional, thanks to Hobie and Erik from Mindjet. I asked for some creative, thoughtprovoking mindmaps. And did I receive some, oh yeah. Now here is the big cliche, it was hard to pick five winners from the entries. It really was! I received about 20 mindmaps on all sorts of subjects. The diversity how people use mindmaps is very interesting to see. But as they say, only a few can win. So without further adue here are the winners in random order. You can click on the thumbnails for a larger view
