This is the last day at work for me this year. And I noticed a funny behaviour yesterday and this morning. Normally, I would be at work to well...work. But yesterday and also today I have the strong urge to tie all loose ends, to clean up, to start fresh in 2007, to...well...dare I say it...do a Weekly Review.
So I was wondering, why is that? Because it is the end of the year ofcourse. But that's nothing than an agreement some old druids, wizards, emperors made a few centuries ago. In actuality, it is just the night from sunday to monday. I wondered about this since my daughter is born. To her, three months old, every day and night is the same. She doesn't care if dinner is served and whether it's turkey, beef or french fries. She wants milk. NOW! Christmas was a bit different for us to say the least :-)
The same with coming sunday. Past years, we would visit friends, have a party, go out after midnight and have a few (too many) drinks. This year, we stay at home, just the three of us. And to Tess, sundaynight is like every other night. She needs to be fed at regular times, she needs her sleep and she needs us. It doesn't make a difference
Where does this lead to? Look at your own behaviour. Why do you clean up at the end of the year? Why not treat every friday, or every sunday, like the last (work)day of the year?
Since my life version 2.006 is almost over (geek humor, I'm sorry) it is time to vote for the best post on this blog. I made a Squidoo Lens (a WHAT?) so it is easy for all of you to vote. Let me know what you think and I know what the way to write will be in my life v2.007 (oohhh....)

Update: Squidoo is on and off maintenance the last days. If the above doesn't show a list of entries, try again later...

I just read a blogpost by a Dutch friend of mine (written in Dutch) who talks about 2006 as a year where he had great successes. At the same moment he questions how important his career is and how he could for instance introduce an email free day. With this thought he shows an older commercial by Vodafone with a mayfly. Listen and watch. And think for yourself in the coming days off: What changes would you like make in 2007, both personal and professional?
Marco, thanks for the insight on this beautiful sundaymorning!
My girlfriend asked me the other day: You are writing two years on your blog. But one day, you must know everything there is to know about GTD? You must be out of topics someday? One thing I have learned the last years is that GTD is a path to personal productivity with many many new ways to explore and find your own style. Since the incarnation of this blog I have been on and off the bandwagon, trying numerous online applications (how many Thinking MoleMonkeyTiddlyBackpack Addin Managers can you have?) and constantly finding better ways to improve my own productive self.
I wholeheartedly recognize the phrase from The Dave the other day: “You will need somewhat over two years to really get going with GTD.”
That is absolutely the truth. When I started with the book, first thing I did was do a braindump. Where? On a platform, waiting for a late train. Just on a piece of paper. I thought to myself, man, this is it! Now I am free to think creative again.
I found that piece of paper two weeks later somewhere on my desk and threw it away.
Last week I wrote a review of the excellent MindManager add-in GyroQ. Yes, I am biased, because I simply love the product. It is transparant, non-obtrusive, there when you need it and highly customizable. Anyway, I wanted to give more people a chance to try this software for themselves. Together with Nick Duffill from Gyronix we wrote out a contest to win one of 5 licenses of GyroQ Developer Edition. Just as a sidenote: Check out Nicks Webinar on MindManager and ResultManager he gave earlier this week. Very interesting!
I must say I am very surprised to have received just three entries! That’s all! With the MindManager contest, I received much more and it was pretty hard to decide the winners. I don’t know why this is. Was the contest not interesting enough? Was it too hard to find? Unclear? I would like to hear from you so I can learn from it for perhaps a next time.
So even though there a just a few winners, I know they will be thrilled to know they have won!
This is an article which is part of my weblog "What's the Next Action". It deals with everything GTD and the five phases of projectplanning as written by Dave Allen in his book "Getting Things Done".
